In 1801, Athens was chosen as the site for the first chartered state university in the nation. In 1990, Athens and Clarke County combined to form Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, but is mostly referred to as Athens. Not only is the university course great, but there are over ten courses surrounding the area of Athens.
